King Ludwig II knew where it was particularly beautiful in his Bavarian homeland. That is why he had his illustrious residences built there, such as Linderhof Castle in the idyllic Graswang Valley. The Ammer also has its source right there in the Weidmoos, and the accompanying river cycle path starts here. The river meanders between high mountains to the Passion Play centre of Oberammergau and on to Rottenbuch Abbey. The river leaves the Alps through the Ammer Gorge and into the Alpine foothills.
After just over 200 kilometres, the varied, well-signposted Ammer-Amper cycle path ends at Moosburg an der Isar.
The majority of the route runs along traffic-free cycle paths and forest tracks, but only around half of the route is tarmac. The first part of the route around the Ammergau Alps in particular includes a few challenging climbs. From the Ammersee towards the north, however, the route is mostly flat. We recommend a bike with tyres that are not too narrow and a gear ratio suitable for mountain biking. The entire route is suitable for children aged 12 and over.
