As a seasoned enduro rider, Max Schumann rubbed his eyes in Les Arcs: the French Western Alps are criss-crossed by kilometres of trails. His favourite: the recommendation of a chef.

A Brit comes to France and becomes a chef. It almost sounds like the old joke about the Opel Manta outside university - but Sam has already made a name for himself here in Les Arcs. Hired as head chef in the chalets of bike organiser Trail Addiction, he stirs the pots and pans in the mornings and evenings. In the hours in between, he rocks the trails in the Savoy Alps himself.

We have also followed the bike signs here for a few days and have experienced some really beautiful trails. The difficulty levels of the designated network of trails range from green, blue, red to black. From gravel paths suitable for large families to challenging downhill trails. But today we have one of the chef's recommendations on the agenda: the La Varda trail, Sam's favourite freeride tour.
