Endless descents, incredibly good trails, stoneflow - that's the Zona Zero in the Spanish Pyrenees. The small town of Aínsa in the Sobrarbe region forms the epicentre, surrounded by a trail network of over 1000 kilometres. What makes it special: Almost all of the trails in the Zona Zero are nature trails between often abandoned mountain villages. In 2005, local enduro enthusiasts began to awaken the ancient caminos from their slumber. Twelve years ago, they founded the mountain bike centre, which is freely accessible to all.
The Zona Zero consists of eight sectors with challenging, signposted routes. Both circular tours and pure descents with shuttles that can be booked on site are possible. Additional GPS tours with detailed descriptions are available online. Travelling time: always! In the lower areas of Zona Zero, you can ski all year round. www.zonazeropirineos.com
Must have: Ztrails, the Zona Zero app! Indispensable for tour planning, navigation and information about the condition of the trails or temporary closures (e.g. hunting): www.ztrails.com
Albergue Mora de Nuei, a 19th century house restored as a hostel in the medieval town of Aínsa. Fully equipped for bikers. There is a fully equipped kitchen for self-catering. But you shouldn't miss out on the creative cuisine of the restaurant. www.alberguemoradenuei.com
Drinking local beer: La Tronzadora, the "Zona Zero Official Beer". Tastes good and does good. With every beer sold, 10 cents are donated to trail maintenance.
The Revier-Report costs 1.49 euros.
