Venice-Rome long-distance cycle route
A magnificent cross-section of Italy through Veneto, Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio.

All roads lead to Rome and this is a very special one, especially for those travelling by bike. However, the length of the route and the hilly to mountainous landscape between the Adriatic and the Tyrrhenian Sea require a good level of fitness. If you have this, you can look forward to the many scenic and cultural highlights. The route starts in the lagoon city and heads south towards Lido and Chioggia, continuing along the Adriatic Sea to the Po Delta and on to Ravenna with virtually no ascent. After that, the mountain stage slowly but surely begins over the Apennines towards Florence. The hilly stretches then accompany the Italian traveller until shortly before Rome. This means that the journey to the towns worth seeing in Tuscany and Umbria, such as Arezzo, Cortona, the old university town of Perugia and the popular pilgrimage destination of Assisi, will also cause many a drop of sweat to flow. But the picture-book landscape, the local cuisine and the countless picturesque towns are well worth the effort. There is no official signposting for the route (yet).
