Some stretches of the Alpe-Adria Cycle Path are perfectly developed
From the mountains to the sea, the 415-kilometre-long Alpine crossing leads from Salzburg to the Italian fishing village of Grado. The Alpe-Adria cycle path is a popular transalpine route to the Adriatic for touring cyclists.

The Alpe-Adria cycle path is one of Six Transalp routes for touring cyclists. On the Transalp Alpe-Adria, the main Alpine ridge is travelled along the Tauern lock between Böckstein and Mallnitz by rail shuttle (timetable and prices at www.oebb.at). Heavily travelled sections in Austria between Golling and Werfen as well as steep climbs between Schwarzbach and Bad Gastein can also be covered by bus and train as an alternative.

The Tarvis cycle path starts in Arnoldstein and runs along the former railway line from the border. From Maggio Udinese, the route runs mostly on minor roads, from Udine on the so-called In@natoura route and from Palmanova along the Via Julia Augusta to Grado. The cycle paths are not asphalted throughout. A sturdy touring bike with good gearing and all-terrain tyres is recommended.

Journey to Salzburg and return journey from Grado

Salzburg is easy to reach by train. Travelling from Grado is more complicated. The nearest railway station is Cervignano del Friuli, approx. 17 km away. Bicycle transport requires a reservation and is often very difficult in practice on Italian trains.

Return transport from Grado to Salzburg:

The return journey is more convenient with a shuttle bus. This is offered by various companies:
