Sentiero Valtellina
Bormio is primarily known to winter sports enthusiasts. However, a newly created cycle path through the Valtellina towards Lake Como also starts here.

Two newly created cycle paths open up the Valtellina to touring cyclists. The "Sentiero Valtellina" and the "Ciclabile della Valchiavenna". You can either return to your starting point along the same route, albeit with a few climbs, or take the railway from many places.

Sentiero Valtellina:

Ciclabile della Valchiavenna:

Racing cyclists coming over the Stelvio Pass from South Tyrol or MTB Alpine crossers from Livigno or the Engadine are also familiar with the Valtellina. The "Sentiero Valtellina", a newly created traffic-free and largely perfectly asphalted cycle path, now also opens up the charming landscape in Lombardy between Bormio and Lake Como to touring cyclists. The route runs along the Adda river for 115 kilometres, always slightly downhill, until you reach Lake Como in Colico. Along the way there are places worth seeing such as the provincial capital of Sondrio or Tirano. A cultural detour to the Madonna di Tirano pilgrimage church is recommended here. From Tirano, you also have the option of boarding the Rhaetian Railway and travelling to St. Moritz on the Bernina Express. A scenic highlight, especially if you catch one of the few open convertible carriages! If you cycle all the way to Lake Como, you have the option of taking another newly created cycle path via Chiavenna towards the Swiss border. However, the "Ciclabile della Valchiavenna" leads from Colico approx. 42 km uphill, sometimes steeply, to the border town of Castasegna in Bergell. All the larger towns are easily accessible by train, so the return journey to the starting point is also guaranteed. There are numerous other cycle connections from Lake Como, for example to the Lombardy Lakes Route, which connects Lake Maggiore with Lake Garda.
