Secret routes in and around Sweden's capital
Sweden's magnificent capital is spread over a handful of islands. Thousands more lie all around it.

Large and small, green and inhabited. Connected by ferries - and just right for travelling by bike. TREKKINGBIKE has researched attractive routes through the city and its rocky front garden.

Info: Stockholm/Skerries

Arrival

Car/boat:

Unfortunately, the ferries do not land in Stockholm, and the Swedish railways do not take bicycles on their own. This means: rent a bike or travel by car and boat or by plane. Ferry information at http://www.stenaline.de, http://www.ttline.com, http://www.scandlines.de

aeroplane:

Stockholm Arlanda International Airport is served frequently by many airlines. Inexpensive flights from Germany are available from Flynordic .

Archipelago boats:

From Stockholm city centre to the archipelago islands and between them, you can take one of the scheduled boats operated by Waxholmsbolaget, tel. 0046/8/679 58 30; http://www.waxholmsbolaget.se Not all boats have space for bicycles. It is therefore advisable to discuss your travel plans with the shipping company's office at the landing stage.

Accommodation

Private youth hostels or those run by the STF offer an alternative to hotels. The standard is usually higher than that of German youth hostels, double rooms are available and there are no age limits. Information on this (also in German) via http://www.stfturist.se Tel. 0046/8/4632100.

Cycle tour to the old lighthouse

Length: approx. 75 kilometres.

From the centre of Stockholm (green signs) to the south, then the red signposted Kustlinjen southwards to the harbour town of Nynäshamn with its famous historic lighthouse. The route avoids the busy road no. 73. Return to Stockholm by local train - one of the few trains that can take bikes!
