The island in the Atlantic is known as the "Island of Flowers". But there's no trace of a ride through the flower meadows. The trails are pretty bitchin'.

Madeira is about the same size as the Canary Island of La Palma and also has a comparable climate. The average temperature here in January is a T-shirt-friendly 19 degrees. A perfect winter destination. But are Madeira's trails also suitable for biking?

Challenging trails on volcanic rock

The Contessa team from Scott set off in spring to test the "Island of Flowers" for its suitability for touring. One of their first findings: Flowers can be pretty nasty. Volcanic rock too. But what's really fun: the challenging trails, the extremely friendly islanders and the food, which takes some getting used to but is extremely tasty. The whole trip in pictures:
