The cycling boom has not yet reached Greece's largest island - much to the delight of individual cycling fans who prefer to explore the varied island in spring and autumn. While the west is quite mountainous, reaching altitudes well above the 2000 metre mark, the east is noticeably gentler.
But anyone travelling from the sea, for example from the popular north coast around Agios Nikolaos, into the island's interior will have to pedal hard here too. For example, up to the Lassithi region, an almost circular high plateau bordered by steep cliffs.
Apart from a few main routes, there is not too much car traffic on Crete's roads. Some side roads are not tarmac. You should also be prepared for steep inclines. A 26-inch touring bike with wide tyres and a gear ratio suitable for uphill riding is recommended.
Agios Nikolaos - Mardati - Kritsa - Katharo - Lassithi Plateau - Agios Georgios - Tzermiadon - Amigdali - Agios Nikolaos; 100 km, 2500 m, medium - difficult
April to June and mid-September to mid-November. In mild years, you can also cycle throughout the winter: Flights to Chania and Heraklion from several German airports from Easter to November. In winter connections via Athens. Bike on the plane for around 50 euros each way.
In the low season you can find rooms in small guesthouses or hotels by the sea.
You should take the most necessary spare parts with you. Bike hire and repair facilities can only be found in larger towns such as Heraklion, Agios Nikolaos, Chania and Chersonissos
