New cycle paths in the south of Italy
Italy is focussing on cycle tourism. As part of a recent European initiative, a wealth of long-distance and circular cycle routes have been signposted in Sicily, Malta and Gozo.

One focus of the project is the long-distance cycle route from Trapani to Siracusa, which even runs partly on disused railway lines. Around 90 per cent of the approximately 600-kilometre route is paved. Only a few sections run on busy roads. The long-distance cycle route is supplemented by a series of circular tours in the individual stage towns. The regions of Agrigento, Caltanisetta, Ragusa, Siracusa, Trapani and Malta have also published special cycle brochures. All brochures can be downloaded free of charge from the website. In addition to the PDF information, GPS tracks are also available, which can be loaded into all navigation devices. But the Sicilians don't want to stop at simply signposting the cycle routes. The island is currently in the process of creating a network of bike-friendly hotels. Cyclists should not only receive a particularly friendly welcome there, but also find secure storage facilities and a repair kit. The newly created website www.medinbike.com provides detailed information in English.
