The Cyclades are an ideal destination for seaworthy cyclists. Car traffic plays a subordinate role on all the islands. Even in the harbour towns, there is usually only traffic for a few minutes when the large transport ferries dock. As soon as the ship has left the harbour, it is quiet again. However, almost all the islands are quite mountainous and some of the roads are in a desolate state. A good gear ratio, sufficient fitness and rather wide tyres are therefore advisable.
The ferry service between the Cyclades islands is perfectly organised. In particular, the large islands such as Mykonos, Paros, Naxos and Santorini are served several times a day. The major ferry routes all depart from Piraeus/Athens and then take different island routes. But there are also connecting ferries between the islands. Taking bicycles with you is completely unproblematic. However, when putting together an individual travel plan, the ferry times will determine the frequency.
Generations of backpackers have shaped a perfect infrastructure. There is an almost inexhaustible number of small private accommodations on every island. The distribution from the ferry port is usually well organised. A quick enquiry in the nearest bar should solve the accommodation problem. The quality of the accommodation varies greatly. A visit is therefore recommended.
In spring and autumn, cyclists can expect pleasant temperatures. In summer it is too hot for cycling in the Cyclades. The best months for travelling are April to June.

We travelled with the Constance-based cycle tour operator Inselhüpfen in April 2008. The one-week group tour starts and ends in a harbour near Athens. The bikes are provided. The ship is the ideal base for exploring the islands. The tour usually starts at 9 am. Return around 2 pm. You can cycle with a guide or on your own. You just have to be back in time, as the ship usually heads for the next harbour in the afternoon. Accommodation and meals are always provided on board. Price for the eight-day round trip: 1290 euros. Tel. 07531/8199390, http://www.inselhuepfen.de
