In the second half of the 19th century, the Salzkammergut developed into a popular tourist region. The constantly growing number of guests demanded good transport options.

Reason enough to build the Salzkammergut local railway, known as the SKGLB or Ischlerbahn for short. From 1893 to 1957, steam locomotives puffed along the particularly scenic route from the provincial capital of Salzburg along Mondsee and Wolfgangsee to the imperial summer residence of Bad Ischl.

Today, the former railway line is a section of the Salzkammergut cycle path. With a few exceptions, the route runs entirely along the former railway line. Anyone interested in the history of the former narrow-gauge railway should plan a detour to the SKGLB Museum in Mondsee, with original steam locomotives and carriages on display in the coach house of the former railway station by the lake. If you are more in the mood for the Weißes Rössl on Lake Wolfgangsee, take a boat trip across the lake to the famous inn.
