Flat through the mountains on the Salzkammergut cycle path
Habsburg yellow and emerald green - two colours that represent an interesting mixture of landscape and history in the Salzkammergut and its lakes. The landscape is also mountainous to the east of Salzburg. But the Salzkammergut cycle path avoids unnecessary hardship.

In the Salzkammergut, there are a number of cycle paths that can be combined to create a beautiful circular tour around the Salzkammergut lakes. On the tour described here, you mainly cycle along the Salzkammergut cycle path, also known as R 2. The routes mostly run along tarmac cycle paths or goods roads and quiet side roads.

Climbs cannot be completely avoided in the Alpine republic, especially between the lakes you can expect one or two ascents. Steeper sections (e.g. the Koppen Pass between Obertraun and Bad Aussee) can be avoided by taking the railway (see "Getting there"). There are often several cycle paths with different gradients to choose from (e.g. the Höllengebirge between Traunsee and Attersee can be conquered in both a sporty and a more gentle form).

Journey

By train, e.g. to Bad Ischl, Gmunden or Salzburg (the Salzkammergut cycle path takes you from Salzburg to Mondsee). Info under www.bahn.de and www.oebb.at (Information on the regional lines).

By car via the A8 motorway (Munich-Salzburg), then via the Westautobahn (A 1) to Mondsee or Seewalchen.
