Enjoyable crossing of the Alps by bike
Along Austria's most beautiful long-distance cycle paths, enjoyment is not only a priority in the saddle, but also off the track

Cycling along rivers is considered to be particularly relaxing, almost meditative. You don't have to worry much about navigation and routing, just follow the course of the water. There are rarely any major inclines to overcome, and nature does the rest for your overall well-being. On our cycle tour across Austria, we follow the Inn and Salzach rivers north of the main Alpine ridge and the Drau in the south, three major water veins in the Alpine region.

The smaller mountain rivers Gasteiner Ache and Möll also accompany us part of the way. And then there is the Danube, but as a supporting actor it is only responsible for the intro.

Beer region Innviertel
The Innviertel region came from Bavaria to Austria in 1779. Today, 10 breweries brew more than 80 types of beer in the Bavarian tradition with an Austrian sense of fine gastronomy.

At the latest at the Stiegl-Gut Wildshut, where the entire brewing process takes place, from the original grains and hops from our own farm to malting and serving, we realise that we can hardly resist the culinary temptations of this trip. After the many impressions of the landscape, we enjoy an evening stroll through the beautiful cultural city of Salzburg.

Organic is a top priority here. A look at the "Via Culinaria" gourmet guide, which has been published by the Salzburger Land region for many years, shows which culinary highlights we can expect on our onward journey along the Salzach and through the Gastein Valley...

Tour character

The entire route of this easy Alpine crossing is mostly asphalted or finely gravelled on good paths. The gradients upstream are hardly noticeable. There are only short, steeper sections near Burghausen.
From Schwarzach through the Gastein Valley, most of the metres in altitude have to be overcome, and before Bad Gastein it is steeper. From Mallnitz it is almost all downhill or on level ground to Villach.
