The fascinating mountain world is a welcome retreat from the holiday resorts between San Agustin and Puerto Rico. There are also hardly any exciting cycle routes along the Atlantic. You either cycle through urbanised countryside or the car traffic spoils your cycling pleasure.
But the magnificent red mountains, especially in the south and centre of the island, demand stamina. In return, they offer plenty for the eye, serpentine after serpentine: white villages, far-reaching views of the neighbouring islands, wild gorges, mighty candelabra cacti and, in January/February, slopes full of white and pink almond trees in bloom. And downhill, the pure joy of driving dominates. It's like surfing through endless bends. Caution! Cyclists should take a rest day on Sunday, as half of Gran Canaria is out and about in the mountains by car and motorbike, having picnics.
