Cycling in Vulkanland

It's not just racing cyclists and touring bikers who love the north-easternmost Canary Island. Lanzarote advertises itself with the claim "European sports destination". And indeed, many sports teams fly here, from triathletes to long-distance runners, to prepare for the coming season. Unfortunately, these competitive athletes often lack the necessary leisure time to enjoy the bizarre beauty of the black volcanic landscape beyond the white tourist villages. In 1993, Lanzarote was the first island to be declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO.

You are not allowed to cycle in Timanfaya National Park, but there are some stony paths through the fascinating lunar landscape in the peripheral zones. Explorers should therefore choose a bike with wide tread tyres. These are also recommended for the worthwhile excursion to the small neighbouring island of La Graciosa.
