The Vltava is considered the mother of all Bohemian rivers and inspired the composer Friedrich Smetana to write his famous symphony. Cycling with this atmospheric melody in your ears is all the better. On this cycle tour, the river provides the orientation out of the Golden City towards the south, to Gothic knights' castles and Hluboka Castle, the most visited castle in the Czech Republic. The route continues to the historic beer metropolis of Budweis, which is not only famous for its beer, and to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Krumlov, with its 300 medieval houses on the Vltava bend. On the rest of the route, cyclists are immersed in the tranquillity and solitude of the Bohemian Forest as they cross over into the Austrian Mühlviertel to Aigen. The final stage leads to the Schlögener Schlinge, an impressive loop in the Danube, and finally to the Three Rivers City of Passau. With a few exceptions, the route runs along country roads with little traffic as well as forest and farm tracks. However, the hills and mountains with longer climbs require a good basic level of fitness, otherwise you will have to enjoy pushing on some sections.
