In winter, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Venice is a little quieter than usual, but it is particularly quiet on the islands that shield the Laguna di Venezia from the open sea. We start our island tour in "Little Venice", in Chioggia at the southern end of the lagoon. The canals and the fish market are particularly worth seeing there. The ferry takes us to the elongated island of Pellestrina.
Donna Leon fans may know it from the novel and TV film "The Law of the Lagoon". You arrive near the Ca' Roman nature reserve and cycle to the village of Portosecco. At the northern tip of the island is the harbour of San Pietro in Volta with its 18th century church, surrounded by fishermen's huts, vineyards and vegetable gardens.
From here, take the ferry to the nearby island of Isola del Lido. Land near the Alberoni nature reserve and take the road along the lagoon to the centre of Malamocco with its characteristic Venetian alleyways and squares.
Finally, take the ferry back to Chioggia or cycle to Sant'Erasmo. On this small island there is a cycle path through the gardens where the famous purple artichokes grow.
