Mighty mountain massifs form the striking backdrop in this part of the Salzkammergut, with idyllic mountain lakes and small villages hidden in between. In addition to marvellous scenery, there are many other sights along the two-day Alpine route. These include the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hallstatt on the lake of the same name, the old imperial town of Bad Ischl, romantic places such as Grundlsee and Altaussee, the lake landscapes of Ausseerland and - with a short detour by chairlift - the Tauplitzalm, the largest lake plateau in Central Europe. With an altitude difference of almost 1500 metres, the Great Eight requires a good level of fitness. Fortunately, in the Salzkammergut region, there are plenty of well-stocked inns waiting to replenish your energy levels. Not forgetting a nice boat trip to relax on Lake Hallstatt or Lake Grundlsee.
