Anyone who only thinks of rugged, steep rocky giants when they think of Alpine peaks has not yet been to the Carinthian Nockberge mountains, the highest mountain range in the Gurktal Alps. Here, rounded, grass-covered mountains line up like an oversized meadowland. Part of the Nockberge has even been officially recognised as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2012. There has been a ski resort on the edge of the park since the 1950s, but winters are getting milder and milder in Austria's southernmost province. So they thought about how the mountain railway could at least be used in the summer months. The result was one of the most elaborate trail projects in the Alps: a 15-kilometre flow country trail, the longest of its kind in Europe.
