While time seems to have stood still on the Wildkogel Trail since 2003, the rest of the region has developed enormously in terms of bike tourism since the Transalp success. The communities of the "Hohe Tauern National Park Holiday Region" have joined forces to form the "Tauernbike" project. Bike-enthusiastic locals have since carved 100 specially designated bike tours with a total length of 1000 kilometres into the landscape. One of these locals is called Hans-Peter Kreidl or simply "HP". A Transalp participant himself in 2002, he has been pulling the strings when it comes to bike infrastructure in Neukirchen and the surrounding area ever since. After the race at the latest, he knows exactly what bikers need. "We have the right trail for every requirement and all skill levels," he tells us that evening over a giant schnitzel at the Gasthof Neuhof biker centre. The Tauern cycle path was recently extended for families, while single trail fans have plenty to do for days on the Wildkogel and in the Mühlbachtal valley. Towards the north, on the Kitzbühel Grasberge, the valley opens up for really big marathon laps, and if you want to see high alpine panoramas, crank into the Tauern valleys until you come right up to the glacier tongues.
