Germany's highest peak is Austrian on its southern side. There, the Zugspitze is only a B-list attraction. The MTB trails that wind around its rock face belong on every tour hit list.

On its German side, the Zugspitze is rather inaccessible for bikers. You can pedal right up to the Reintalangerhütte, then that's it. You can't get any closer to it from the south side, but you can usually see its striking rock face. And from almost every tour that rolls out at its feet in the Tiroler Zugspitzarena.

The most beautiful MTB tours on the south side of the Zugspitze

An absolute dream trail winds down from above the Grubigalm to the Blindsee lake, for example. The path is steep, but a dip in Caribbean-blue bathing water awaits at the bottom. The excursion to the newly built Rotmoos Alm is a panoramic classic and the tour to Seebensee is hard to beat in terms of scenery. The two authors Armin Herb and Daniel Simon have recorded the 30 most beautiful tours around the Zugspitze in their BIKE Guide Zugspitzarena. In this area guide, they have selected five absolute dream tours.

Gitta Beimfohr joined the BIKE travel resort during her tourism studies when the Strada delle 52 Gallerie on the Pasubio was closed to mountain bikers. Since Gitta crossed the Alps twice at racing speed, she has favoured multi-day tours - by MTB in the Alps or by gravel bike through the German low mountain ranges.
