Lake Achensee - it looks a little like Lake Garda as it lies there - wedged between the Karwendel and Rofan mountains, halfway down the Inntal valley. A truly breathtaking backdrop. For Munich bikers, this gem is only 80 minutes away by car. But the lake is in Tyrol. There would also be plenty of fine trails here, but they are taboo in Tyrol. At least officially. "Thank goodness," I hear my friend sigh at this point. Even the authorised trails are sufficiently challenging. She is one of those bikers who will do anything for a scenic highlight. Cranking uphill for hours on end, even pushing a bit, and even shouldering the bike if it's for a beautiful view. However, after all that effort, she also wants to be rewarded with a thrilling descent. Challenging, rough trails like those on Lake Garda don't fall into this category for her. And that's exactly why we're now out and about with the bikes on Lake Achensee.
