Battle axe

Loosen soil, cut nasty roots and lever out boulders. Where you can't get any further with a shovel, a hoopoe hoe will help you build your dream line. It should be robust and sharp, so that roots capitulate to it and you can also clear thick boulders out of the way. Price: approx. 40 € >> available here.

All-purpose weapon

The folding spade is suitable for trenching, spade walking and as a close combat weapon. Why shouldn't it also be suitable as a trail tool? Cut roots. Check! Move earth. Check! Knock it down. Check! The short handle is the shortcoming of the folding spade. But it's easy to transport. "The folding spade will do in a pinch, but the shovel is better!" says professional trail builder Kim. Price: approx. 30 € >> available here.

Shredder

Storm Sabine threw branches and trees onto the trail at the beginning of the year. Handy if you have a handy saw with you. Stop, saw through the trunk and off you go. To avoid ruining your rucksack, you can retract the saw blade. Ideal for trail maintenance and easy to stow away. Price: 30 € >> available here.

Stielauge

The most important trail tool! The shovel. Moving earth, shaping it into berms or jumps and tamping it down with a good bang. "It's indispensable if you want to build a trail," says the professional trail builder. Important: a long, robust handle and a sturdy shovel. For example, the Ideal spade shovel. It has ripper teeth with which it eats into the ground. Price: 48 € >> available here.

Tip giver and expert Kim Christian (professional trail builder):

"Make sure there is a water drain. Otherwise the next rain will wash the whole trail away."
