More and more manufacturers are offering so-called tool straps or Velcro straps with which tools can be cleverly transported on the MTB. Attached to the bottle cage holes or directly to the frame, they keep puncture repair tools such as mini-tools, tyre levers and spare inner tubes ready to hand at all times. We tested three solutions.

Topics in this article

Rose Tool Strap

The Rose Tool Strap consists of two independent Velcro straps. The inner one secures a spare inner tube. On the outer one, secured by small retaining eyelets, you can also attach tyre levers, a mini tool and even a pump.

The whole thing is lashed over the hose with the retaining plate, which sits on the bottle holder holes, to form a handy package. This is practical, uncomplicated and everything is within easy reach. The disadvantage is that depending on where you mount the tool strap, it is more or less exposed to dirt and water. In addition, the holder is not designed to be fixed to the frame at any position using cable ties. This means you have to rely on the existing bottle cage holes. The Velcro itself could also be a little longer. With the mini tool and tyre lever included in the package, the Velcro can just about be closed.

76 Projects Little Piggy on Bike Storage

The sturdy mounting plate of the Little Piggy can be attached directly to the bottle cage holes as well as to the frame - making it very flexible and giving you the option of taking a water bottle with you on tour.

The length of the Velcro strap can be easily adjusted as required. This allows the tube, minitool and other accessories to be tied together as required. Nice detail: the chain lock holder on the base plate.

Also available with pannier bag

The Little Piggy is also available with an optional pouch (as a set for 46.95 euros). The Piggy Pouch has a volume of around 0.5 litres. The waterproof pouch with roll-top closure can therefore hold a spare inner tube, mini tool and small items such as a CO2 cartridge, brake pads or chain lock.

A clear advantage over the version without a pouch: the utensils stay clean and dry in the pack sack even in bad weather. Be careful when packing: The Piggy Pouch can't hold too much, otherwise the Velcro fastening on the bag won't close.

Granite Rockband Mountain Bike Frame Carrier Strap

The Rockband strap is probably the simplest, lightest and cheapest way to attach your spare tube to your bike for repairs on the road. It is a solid Velcro strap on which the spare tube can also be secured. There is also enough space underneath or next to it for a mini-tool, tyre lever or CO2 cartridge.

Everything is tied together to form a handy package and is best secured in a corner of the frame. To ensure that the strap doesn't slip even in the heaviest of bumps, the part that is attached to the frame is rubberised. This means that the Rockband strap sits securely even without being screwed to a bottle cage hole. Although this solution is also susceptible to dirt, sometimes the simple solutions are simply the best.
