More and more bikers are relying on frames or components made of carbon fibre. This is because carbon fibre parts are usually lighter and stiffer than aluminium, yet still robust. However, a component made of this lightweight material cannot counteract a clamping that is too tight: Whether frame, handlebars or seat post - all parts give way if clamped too tightly. This is not only expensive, but also dangerous. That's why you should never do without a torque spanner when tightening screws! However, torque spanners are usually expensive and unwieldy.
Here the Nano Torqbar from Topeak Remedy. This is a twelve-centimetre-long tool into which a preset torque attachment is inserted at one end. For 30 euros, the buyer can choose between four, five and six Newton metres. An additional torque attachment (with the same bits) can be purchased at a later date for 20 euros. We tested the variant with five Newton metres. In addition to the actual tool, the scope of delivery includes a small box containing the torque attachment and five bits (3, 4, 5 mm hexagon socket and Torx T20 & T25). Two of the five bits and the torque attachment can be hidden in the tool to save space. This means the tool fits easily into a jersey or saddle bag and weighs just 65 grams. Complete with box and all bits, it weighs 98 grams.
Handling is simple: Remove the torque attachment from the box or the end of the Torqbar and insert it. The desired bit can then be removed and inserted. The bits are either stored firmly in the box or secured in the tool with a magnet. When the torque is reached, the tool emits an audible click. This is not only unusual - torque spanners normally have a haptic signal - but can also be easily overheard. However, after a short period of familiarisation, we got on well with it. In the meantime, the Nano Torqbar has become a reliable companion on bike tours and a permanent fixture in our workshop.
The high-quality Nano Torqbar from Topeak is not only a reliable companion for tours, but also an affordable alternative to a "normal" torque spanner for the workshop.
