The "+" is new. The Leatherman Charge and Wave tools are classics in the American multi-tool manufacturer's programme. Interchangeable wire cutters now make them even more versatile.

There's always something missing with multi-tools, and even Leatherman doesn't have a one-size-fits-all solution. Either a bit holder or tweezers, flint or Phillips screwdriver, scissors or hammer - oh, which tool has a proper saw and a knife without a serrated edge?

The LeathermanTools Wave + (149 Euro), Charge + (199 euros) and Charge TTi (249 euros) still come pretty close to the ideal of an all-round tool. Although the in-house comparison with the survival tool Signal and you can do without a hammer, flint, knife sharpener and emergency whistle. In return, you get: small scissors (for nose hair, fingernails or plasters), two files (coarse for wood and metal, fine for finishing fingernails), two mini screwdrivers (for sunglasses or electronic devices) and a long blade without a serrated edge.

The latter is better suited for buttering bread and, as our colleagues from the YACHT Magazine here for quickly cutting all kinds of cordage. The second long blade with waves is better at slicing through bread. The Leatherman Charge TTi model has titanium handle scales as well as a ripper blade for harnesses or even leather. Good: Blades, file and saw are on the outside and can be opened quickly even when the tool is folded up, the knives can also be opened with one hand. All tools lock into place when open.
Please observe the manufacturer's instructions for carrying tools with lockable knife blades that can be operated with one hand.

A new addition to the tools is the redesigned pliers with replaceable, ultra-hard wire cutters. We have tried it out and it can also cleanly cut Bowden cables and outer cable sheaths as well as 2 mm spokes - at least when new. If the cutting performance deteriorates, it can be removed and resharpened or replaced.

Useful functions for mountain bikers

The bit holder is important for bikers and the optionally available Leatherman Bit Kit with all kinds of Allen and Torx spanners is interesting. The set's plastic carrier also serves as a tyre lever in the event of a puncture. Also useful for bikers: the crimping pliers are perfect for clamping cable end caps without crushing the cap and cable end. So there's not much left to make an egg-laying wool-milk sow, such as a chain riveter and corkscrew. But with the Leatherman Wave +, Charge + and Charge + TTi tools, the manicure set is already on the man (or woman). Guaranteed for 25 years.

Sebastian Brust was born in 1979 and was originally socialised on his grandmother's folding bike, but has mainly been riding studded tyres since his fifth birthday. Loves all kinds of bikes - and merging with nature. Believes that disc brakes are much safer today than they were 15 years ago and thinks he has helped with his brake and pad tests. However, the trained vehicle technology engineer very much regrets that the bicycle industry is orientating itself on what he considers to be the wrong ideals of the car industry. At BIKE, he corrects, produces and organises digital content on the website.
