Of course, you can manage with fewer tools if necessary - as long as you know which tools are required on your own bike. But if you want to help other people who have broken down on the road to get their tyres back on track, you should have a fully equipped mini-tool in your bag. For us, this means: Allen keys in sizes 2 to 8, at least a 25 mm Torx, screwdrivers, chain riveters and, ideally, the most important spoke spanners.
With sufficiently long tools, you can even reach hidden screws, and the tool housing or the folded-out bits as an extension increase the leverage for tight screws. Nice extras such as tyre levers, pad spreaders or brake disc tools are also becoming increasingly common on the tiny bikes. The most innovative manufacturers also integrate CO² pumps, chain lock holders or chain hooks into their tools. The only thing that is really superfluous is an extra bottle opener for the cool soda after work - with a little practice, you can pop the stopper off the bottle with the mini tool itself.
Why not free of charge? Because quality journalism has a price. In return, we guarantee independence and objectivity. This applies in particular to the tests in BIKE. We don't charge for them, but the opposite is the case: we do charge for them - tens of thousands of euros every year.
