POC Myelin - an innovative bike helmet

The Myelin is the first helmet from POC to be made from 50% recycled material. All of its components are designed so that they can be recycled at the end of their service life. At first glance, it may look like an ordinary bike helmet, but the clean look of the Myelin conceals a number of advanced technical and design details: the innovative use of a woven shell, the absence of adhesives and a design that allows the helmet to be dismantled into individual parts at the end of its service life.

"We wanted to challenge the idea that safety and sustainability cannot go hand in hand in a helmet. As a manufacturer of protective equipment, the safety of riders is our top priority. But we also have an obligation to treat our planet's resources with respect. That's why we wanted to question the conventional way in which helmets are made. Especially when we start with recycled materials, how it is made and how it can be disassembled again so that all materials can be reused. We are very proud of the Myelin because it paints a picture of a world where resource utilisation and conservation naturally merge and provide even more reasons to ride a bike - which will help us all to contribute to a better and healthier life," said Claes Nellestam, Senior Designer, POC.

The Myelin is a helmet designed for all cyclists, especially for everyday use and commuting. The ability to easily disassemble the helmet and return the individual parts to the cycle is achieved through an innovative design and construction.

Half of the materials used in the Myelin are recycled and are held together by strategically placed fasteners and a unique recycled fabric shell, eliminating the need for adhesives and laminated materials. This allows the individual pieces of material to be separated by anyone with simple tools at the end of the helmet's life. Once the connecting elements have been cut, the helmet can be dismantled into its individual parts.

A perfect example of the innovative approach is the new fit system, which is inspired by the snap-fit systems used in baseball caps. It allows cyclists to adjust the fit of the helmet easily and as often as desired. In addition, the straps are made from a single piece that runs over the entire helmet. This allows it to be securely fastened to the head without using anchors incorporated into the EPS.

The Myelin is also a perfect example of POC's Whole Helmet Concept™, where every component and part of the helmet is designed to optimise the whole. In the case of the Myelin, it's about using our planet's resources respectfully, being inspired by the circular economy approach and moving forward with new ideas and innovations.

"We want to offer the highest level of protection for cyclists and our natural resources. By taking a resource-efficient, bio-circular perspective, we have a clear idea of what resources are needed to fulfil the function of our products and choose preferred materials such as recycled or bio-based. But we also choose materials that maximise the durability, lifespan and recyclability of the product. Our aim is to constantly improve, but we also want to show what is possible and lead the way in maximising the use of all resources," says POC's Sustainability Manager, Marie Sjöström.

Myelin is an important step forward, but there is still a lot to do. POC has set itself the goal of transferring much of its research and testing work in the field of sustainable resource utilisation to other products over time. The principle is to ensure maximum safety and protection while minimising the negative impact as much as possible.

With the development of Myelin, POC has shown what is possible. The development of products that can be designed with resource efficiency and longevity in mind should inspire everyone to recognise the potential of the future.

Win one of three POC Myelin:

Myelin product details

Myelin was developed so that it can be broken down. It is very advanced and at the same time as little complex as possible in order to conserve our planet's resources.

Recycled materials

50 % of the materials used for the myelin are recycled.

Cap: Recycled polyester

Lower ring: Recycled nylon

Straps: Recycled polyester

Upholstery: Recycled polyester

Total %: 50

Designed to be dismantled

The helmet can be easily dismantled into its individual parts and recycled at the end of its life.

EPS liner

A lightweight EPS liner offers optimum protection

Bowl made from recycled fabric

An outer shell made from recycled fabric enables a laminate-free construction.

Construction without adhesives

The helmet has been developed with as few different materials and parts as possible. The materials and the unique design of the helmet hold each other securely in place.

Snap lock

A simple snap adjuster in combination with elasticated sections in the straps ensures a secure fit that does not need to be adjusted when putting on and taking off the helmet.

Embossed logo

An embossed logo makes printed logos or the use of other materials superfluous.

Ventilation

A perforated grid on the top of the helmet allows heat to escape.
