A terrain with soul

Geologically, the Mühlviertel is part of the Bohemian Massif. The granite, significantly older than the Alps, characterises the subsoil and topography. For gravel bikers and racing cyclists, this means a landscape with gentle hills, wide views and comparatively moderate gradients. The terrain ranges between 240 and 1,379 metres above sea level, accompanied by clear air and a mild climate - even in midsummer. Travelling or cycling through the Mühlviertel, you will discover historic smugglers' trails, quiet borders and a landscape that leads directly into the soul of the region. The open terrain allows continuous views into the evening hours. The terrain remains challenging but controllable. Between granite, hospitality and goose bumps, every tour is more than just a sporting adventure.

At the regulars' table, locals tell stories, share anecdotes and serve regional specialities such as steaming roasts in the Rein or linseed oil potatoes. This turns Velorama into a journey that you can feel, enjoy and never forget.

The Mühlviertel: Infrastructure at the highest level

The basis is formed by 21 partner businesses that specialise in cycling. Certified cycle accommodation offers secure storage rooms, workshop areas, washing facilities and sports-orientated catering. Premium establishments supplement the offer with guided tours, regeneration offers such as massages or wellness areas as well as indoor training facilities.

The region also emphasises quality and consistency in its cuisine. Partner businesses from the hotel and catering industry, bundled under "Mühlviertler Hoch. Genuss", focus on regional products and quality standards. Regionality is not a fashion here, but an attitude. Short distances, honest cooperation and a deep appreciation of what nature has to offer characterise Mühlviertel cuisine. Whether in the tavern, in the modern country inn or at the award-winning chef's - the seasonal produce is cooked everywhere.

The central location of the Mühlviertel makes travelling from Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic easier. This makes Velorama equally suitable for compact training blocks and tours lasting several days.

Tour variety with structure

A total of 108 tours with around 9,000 kilometres and more than 160,000 metres of altitude difference are available. The offer is divided into three clearly defined categories:

  • Pleasure tours: Moderate distances with scenic highlights and well-placed refreshment stops.
  • Borderline experience: Long stages with a sporting and geographical dimension. Routes lead into the border triangle of Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic and connect different landscapes.
  • Altitude rush: Challenging routes with many metres of elevation gain and a sporty focus.

All tours are GPS-based and digitally available, including via www.velorama.at/touren and platforms such as Komoot, Outdooractive and Strava. This facilitates individual planning as well as riding predefined recommendations.

Tour 1

Organic discovery tour | 332 kilometres, 5,170 metres in altitude | Start/Finish: Linz

The seven-day route covers around 300 kilometres through the Mühlviertel organic region between the Danube and the Vltava. Daily stages of 40 to 75 kilometres on hilly terrain demand a good level of fitness, but reward you with great panoramic views. Regional organic products and traditional specialities await you along the way. Overnight stays are in 3- and 4-star hotels. The Mühlviertel presents itself as a rural region of pleasure with authentic cuisine and a relaxed pace.

Tour 2

Gravel tour in the border triangle | 75.4 kilometres, 1,379 vertical metres | Start/finish: Ulrichsberg

The circular tour from Ulrichsberg combines the Mühlviertel, Bavarian Forest and Czech border region on a challenging route. Over 40 per cent gravel characterises the route, which mainly runs along forest paths, forest roads and cycle paths. After the Dreisesselberg, the route crosses the border into the Czech Republic at Haidmühle. The highlight is the extensive gravel sections along the historic Schwarzenberg alluvial canal to the Vltava reservoir. Technically uncomplicated, the tour nevertheless demands a solid level of fitness due to its length and undulating profile.

Tour 3

Fischer Gravel Tour | 65.6 kilometres, 1,193 vertical metres | Start/Finish: Bad Leonfelden

The 65-kilometre circular tour leads through the Mühlviertel and the Czech Republic with around 1200 metres of ascent. After crossing the border, varied gravel roads run through forests to the Vltava reservoir. A cycle path accompanies the shore before the route continues below the dam wall along the Vltava - the scenic highlight of the route. A detour to the Iron Curtain Memorial near Guglwald is well worthwhile. The return journey to Bad Leonfelden leads via the historic Schwedenschanze.

Tour 4

Road bike Tour de Alm | 182.3 kilometres, 3,740 metres altitude difference | Start/Finish: Königswiesen

This challenging road bike tour, which starts at the Karlingerhaus in Königswiesen, crosses the varied hilly landscape of the Mühlviertel on lonely roads. The route combines numerous climbs with passages through lush alpine meadows and past striking granite formations. Views of the Alpine foothills open up again and again. Due to the length of the route, we recommend planning it as a two-day tour with a return to the Karlingerhaus starting point. A challenging tour for ambitious racing cyclists through the varied low mountain range landscape of Upper Austria.
