ADFC Cycling Climate Test 2022 starts
The ADFC survey on the cycling climate has been running since September. This year's focus is on cycling infrastructure in rural areas. This is what's at the ADFC Cycling Climate Test

The survey consists of 27 standard questions and five additional questions, which are particularly aimed at the needs of smaller towns in rural areas. The questions focus on whether central destinations such as schools, shopping facilities or workplaces are easily accessible by bike, how safe the routes to neighbouring towns feel, whether bicycle parking spaces are available at train stations for bicycle commuters and the independent mobility of children and young people. In 2020, almost 230,000 cyclists took part in the ADFC Cycling Climate Test and rated over 1,000 towns and municipalities.

This is how you can take part in the bike climate test:

From September 2022, participants will once again be able to use a questionnaire to assess whether, for example, it is possible to reach destinations in their city quickly and directly by bike or whether cyclists feel safe. The results will provide transport planners and political decision-makers with practical feedback on the success of their cycling promotion programme and useful tips for improvements. The easiest way to Participation via online questionnaire, in the area of Info & Service you can also download the paper questionnaire free of charge.
Survey period from 01 September to 30 November.
The evaluation has been carried out in six city size classes since 2018:

  • under 20,000 inhabitants
  • 20,000 to 50,000 inhabitants
  • 50,000 to 100,000 inhabitants
  • 100,000 to 200,000 inhabitants
  • 200,000 to 500,000 inhabitants
  • more than 500,000 inhabitants

"The expansion of cycling infrastructure has begun in many places. We are curious to see whether this has already been recognised by cyclists and where politicians need to step on the pedals. That is why we are calling on all cycling enthusiasts to contribute their everyday experiences to the ADFC Cycling Climate Test. The results of the survey will help us to recognise the strengths and weaknesses in the promotion of cycling to date and to align further activities with local needs. Together, we can make good progress in Germany as a cycling nation", Rebecca Peters, ADFC Federal Chairwoman

When will the results of the cycling climate test be available?

The survey will be completed at the end of November 2022, after which the comprehensive scientific analysis of the data collected will begin. The results will be published by the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC) in the Spring 2023 announced. Over the course of the survey period, the ADFC will regularly publish the latest interim results. In this way, you can find out which cities and municipalities have already reached the required minimum number of participants and where it is worth publicising the cycling climate test in order to obtain truly meaningful results.
