Some passes in South Tyrol remain car-free on these days
On certain days of the year, cars have no access to certain passes in South Tyrol. For cyclists, this means: space, space and more space without risky overtaking manoeuvres, exhaust fumes and annoying car noise.

What sounds like a dream for many cyclists comes true on a few days from June to September on South Tyrol's passes: cyclists have the pass roads to themselves and don't have to share them with cars as they usually do.

Two Bike Days in June

It all started with the Dolomites Bike Day on 17 June with the Campolongo, Falzarego and Valparola passes. The next chance for free passes is on 23 June in the Dolomites: The Sellaronda Bike Day offers free rides on the Sella Pass, Gardena Pass, Pordoi Pass and Campolongo Pass. The motor-free spectacle (motorbikes are not allowed either) takes place from 8.30 am to 3.30 pm. Entry is possible in Corvara, Colfosco, Arabba, Selva, Ortisei and Santa Cristina.

In July, we head to the Dolomites once again

The Maratona dles Dolomites 2018 takes place on 1 July. Once again, the Sella Pass, Gardena Pass, Pordoi Pass and Campolongo will be car-free. For safety reasons, however, only 8,000 out of around 25,000 competitors are allowed to take part in the largest road cycling event in the Dolomites. The competition leads over seven passes in the Dolomites.

Three free passes in September

On 1 September, the Stelvio Pass will be tackled without motorised companions: 48 hairpin bends and over 1,800 metres in altitude. From 8 am to 4 pm, the Stelvio Pass road from Trafoi to the top of the pass is closed to motor vehicles - as is the route from the Stelvio Pass to the Umbrail Pass to Santa Maria. If you like it and are fit enough, you can do a nice loop here.

There will then be temporary closures on 2 September on the Jaufenpass and on the Timmelsjoch for the Ötztal Cycle Marathon. And finally, on 22 September, the cycling day on the Mendel Pass will take place.
