The BMC Teammachine SLR 01 is a road bike for the mountains. It is made for climbing, especially for all those who prefer to collect metres of altitude instead of kilometres, who love mountain passes and strive for altitude. And what can the bike do? The performance.

Topics in this article

The new BMC Teammachine SLR 01 adds a lightweight climbing specialist to the BMC portfolio. Alongside the Teammachine R 01, an aerodynamic speedster for flatter stages, the SLR 01 is set to conquer the mountains. It comes in four versions, two with SRAM and two with Shimano drivetrains. In its presentation, BMC shows that it is a climber with the little word "up", small arrows pointing upwards and the word "climb" - one of which can be found on every page of the presentation. In this same press release, the Swiss manufacturer raises high expectations for the Teammachine SLR 01, which was developed to challenge gravity. The new Teammachine SLR 01 is said to be lighter, more precise and faster. The statement is accompanied by a number: The painted frame is said to be 16% lighter in size 54 than its predecessor.

Successful diet

The aerodynamics have also been refined and the Teammachine has been given new tube profiles based on the design of the R 01. The new shape offers less surface area for the wind to attack. But for climbers, weight is the most important factor. According to the manufacturer, 222 grams have been saved and the frame now weighs 700 grams. At 134 grams, the seat post is even 27 % lighter and the fork 8 % lighter - it weighs 339 grams. In frame size 54, this results in a total weight of 1173 grams and a weight saving of 16 %.

But - and this is a positive but: the stiffness has not suffered any losses and is on a par with the Teammachine R 01.

Roadmachine, Teammachine R01, Teammachine SLR 01

The SLR 01 differs from the Teammachine R 01 in that it does not prioritise aerodynamics, but rather a balance between weight, stiffness and comfort. However, both bikes have the same geometry and are designed for racers. In comparison: the geometry of the Roadmachine is slightly more comfortable.

Climbing is not everything

Climbing is not everything, it always includes descents. The geometry has been chosen so that balance and aggressiveness are in harmony with each other.

BMC describes the "magic forward travel number of 63 millimetres" together with the high stiffness as the basis for good handling. Targeted flexibility is intended to dampen road vibrations. The bike flexes vertically by up to 14 millimetres on rough tarmac.

Space for wide tyres

The bike is equipped with 26 millimetre wide tyres, relatively narrow for the times. However, the frame offers space for tyres up to 32 millimetres wide.
