Enduro and marathon in one race?
Enduro and marathon are actually rather irreconcilable disciplines. The Bad Biker from the Harz Mountains have attempted a symbiosis with the Endurothon. Riding fun and sporting spirit took priority.

The Marthon and Enduro disciplines are actually considered irreconcilable. In addition to the bikes themselves, this is also clearly reflected in their outfits. Whilst some are wearing baggy trousers, long jerseys, free-rider bobbles and protectors, others rely on lightweight and well-ventilated cross-country helmets, gloves and tight-fitting lycra. But why is that? It's probably primarily down to the riders themselves, but also to the routes. But what annoys marathon riders about enduro and vice versa?

While die-hard marathon specialists criticise the lack of sporting spirit on the climbs and the breakneck descents in enduro races, enduro riders complain about the tense atmosphere, stress and too little trail in marathons. Reason enough for the Bad Bikers from the Harz Mountains to create an event that combines the advantages of both disciplines. The Endurothon.

On single trails through the Harz Mountains

The participants were sent through the Harz Mountains on numerous different routes for different ability levels. This meant that every single trail could be ridden, as nobody had to worry about too many people. The majority of participants still started on cross-country bikes, but in addition to the sporting challenge on the uphills, there was also plenty of fun to be had on the trails. Imaginative costumes livened up the atmosphere. After the race, the time until the award ceremony could be passed with cake or Hasseröder hop blossom tea. There was no trace of the usual marathon atmosphere - including jostling on the descents, at the start or at the wash stations.

Even though the Endurothon was still primarily a marathon, the concept of combining marathon and enduro was a success. This creates events that are perhaps of interest to both groups and also attracts the odd touring rider. We can only hope that next year's Endurothon will once again succeed in effectively combining sport and riding fun.

Adrian Kaether's favourite thing to do is ride mountain bikes on bumpy enduro trails. The tech expert and bike tester knows all about Newton metres and watt hours, high and low-speed damping. As test manager at MYBIKE, Adrian also likes to think outside the box and tests cargo bikes and step-through bikes as well as the latest (e-)MTBs.
