Modern air suspension on MTBs requires precise tuning, which is not possible without a shock pump. But which pump really measures accurately? And are digital pumps better than analogue ones? In our test, we tested 13 current shock pumps and present them here one after the other. Today: the Specialized Air Tool shock pump.

Specialised Air Tool damper pump - Equipment

The slim Specialised Air Tool damper pump is quite elegant. Its pump body is made entirely of metal, as are the handle and piston. The somewhat small pressure gauge is rubber-coated and thus well protected against impacts, while the long flexible hose is covered with a textile fabric.

Also on board is an easily accessible pressure release button and a long valve head with decoupling function. An attachment for Sclaverand valves is included with the shock pump as an accessory.

Handling

When pumping, the very high-quality Specialized shock pump feels great in the hand. Due to its length, each stroke creates a lot of volume. The piston glides very smoothly through the cylinder. The hand forces also remain pleasantly low and despite its size, the tablet-shaped knob hardly presses into the hand.

The long, flexible hose also contributes to good handling. The cleverly positioned release button allows the pressure to be adjusted sensitively and in small increments. The pressure gauge is also covered with rubber for better protection against knocks. The scale in increments of 20 helps with reading, but the problem of not being able to recognise the exact pressure remains with the Air Tool shock pump. Due to its length, it is more of a pump for the workshop.

Unfortunately, the pressure gauge on the Air Tool is also very small. However, the button for regulating the pressure is very finely adjustable. Measuring accuracy

At lower fork pressure, the deviation of the Specialized is around 2 psi. If the pressure increases, the inaccuracy also increases - but only minimally. Nevertheless, a digital display would be the crowning glory for the Specialized shock pump.

Conclusion: Specialised Air Tool shock pump.

For 75 euros, the analogue Specialized shock pump is really no bargain. But in return you get an extremely high-quality shop tool made entirely of metal. Its handle and the rubberised pressure gauge sit comfortably in the hand, and with its length the pump creates a decent volume. The long coated hose and the simple valve head make handling easier. The pressure can be finely adjusted using the well-placed release button. The scale in increments of 20 helps with reading. Overall, however, the pressure gauge is too small. The measuring accuracy is fine for an analogue pump.
