If you get a flat tyre on tour, you should ideally have a high-volume mini pump in your backpack. The powerful bicycle pumps are designed to inflate fat tyres particularly quickly. We wanted to know whether the inexpensive Riverside MTB hand pump from outdoor giant Decathlon can keep up with the high-end competition.

Decathlon RIVERSIDE mini pump MTB - Features

For an almost ridiculously cheap 15 euros, you can buy an amazingly well-equipped mini pump from the sports discounter Decathlon. Its extendable hose is concealed behind a fold-down dust cap.

The T-shaped pump head serves Presta valves on one side and Schrader valves on the other and is pivoted - something we will come back to in the handling section. The cuddly handle has a safety catch to prevent the mini pump from extending during transport and two telescopic stages, which should provide plenty of pumping volume. Unfortunately, the set does not include a holder for the frame.

Handling / processing

There is also little to be negative about in terms of workmanship. The housing is largely made of aluminium, while the handle and dust cap are made of plastic. Opening the cap and pulling out the hose is a little fiddly, but the T-pump head can be screwed onto the valve very easily. When pumping, the rotating bearing of the pump head prevents the valve from being bent unnecessarily - Decathlon's solution is better than most other pumps with a hose.

Caution: The Decathlon loses a little air when it is screwed on and off. You should therefore not take too much time.

Pumping capacity / manual force

Thanks to its telescopic function, the MTB pump presses plenty of air into the tyre with every stroke. In just under 100 strokes, you can achieve 1 bar, which is really good. The manual force is kept within reasonable limits.

Conclusion & evaluation

With the Riverside hand pump MTB pump, Decathlon delivers absolute value for money. Apart from the angular dust cap and the fiddly tube pull-out, it is a recommendation if you want to get a lot of volume into your tyres quickly. The valve connection is cleverly designed and fits Prest or Schrader valves without having to be screwed on. Top features: the telescopic function and the handle with lock function. Unfortunately, a bracket is not included in the scope of delivery.

* Note: Weight, size and pump strokes per bar are BIKE measurements. We measured the pump strokes per bar with a precision manometer on the volume corresponding to a 29x2.35 inch tyre. The maximum pressure is a manufacturer's specification.
