In keeping with the season, new waterproof MTB shoes are being launched for the winter: the Fizik Terra Nanuq GTX is available with a flat sole and as a clip-in version.

With the new Fizik models, the manufacturer is launching a new cycling shoe on the market for the all-mountain sector. Most recently, Fizik presented the Terra Ergolace GTX from the "Terra" series. The two versions of the Fizik Terra Nanuq GTX are very similar in design and advertise good weather protection thanks to the Gore membrane and grip on the sole. The closure system is also at the centre of the shoe's presentation. Only the soles differ.

This MTB shoe is made for off-road riding, for the time of year when mud, wetness and cold play a major role. The Gore-Tex Koala membrane should not only keep the biker warm and protect them from the wet, it should also be breathable so that the feet don't sweat too much. In addition to the Gore-Tex membrane, the integrated fleece is also responsible for protection against the cold. Together with the flat pedal-specific sole, the Fizik Terra Nanuq can cope with any weather conditions in any terrain. According to the manufacturer, the XS Trek sole is designed to provide grip on and off the bike.

The upper material of this all-mountain shoe is also worth mentioning: it is made from a multi-layer ripstop fabric and is said to be hard-wearing and abrasion-resistant. Additional durability and protection for the toes is provided by the generous, thermolaminated plastic coating (PU) in the side, heel and toe areas.

Comfort of the MTB shoe

In addition to functionality, comfort naturally plays a major role in an MTB shoe. To ensure this, the BOA-Fit system with adjustment wheel and zip is a decisive advantage, in addition to a wider range of shoe sizes (36-48). For years, this has stood for precise adjustment options to adapt the shoe to individual needs.

The flat X2 outsole

With the flat sole, the bike shoe also offers the opportunity to be used sensibly off the bike, because: The X2 outsole aims to increase the range of use of the all-mountain shoe. With the sole of the Terra Nanuq, Fizik wants to combine efficient pedalling performance, comfort and the option of wearing the shoe off the bike.

The sole consists of two layers: The EVA midsole provides stability and cushioning, while the Vibram rubber tread provides grip and traction. The lug profile should not only provide grip on muddy ground, but also on slippery rocks thanks to its rubber compound.

This model does not come with a flat sole, but is otherwise similar to the Fizik Terra Nanuq GTX Flat in many aspects. The Nanuq GTX Clip-in also comes with a Gore-Tex Koala membrane, flow and BOA closure system. The material of this model is also said to be hard-wearing.

The X2 outsole

The big difference between the two shoe models are the soles: Fizik has created a coarser profile for the clip-in version. The Vibram XS Trek EVO rubber profile provides more grip and traction, especially when walking on muddy ground as well as on rocks. And, of course, the Fizik Terra Nanuq has a wide cleat mount for various SPD and Crankbrother clipless pedals.

In addition, the X2 offers a more flexible choice for cleat placement thanks to an extended cleat track with more rebound. The sole itself again consists of two layers, with the EVA midsole also providing stability and cushioning. However, it is significantly stiffer than the flat pedal version.
