With its new EX and ET shoe series models, the bicycle component manufacturer Shimano wants to impress not only on the bike. The models are designed to be suitable for everyday use - the shoe can also be worn off the bike on the way to work or on excursions in your free time. Shimano is presenting two models in each of the EX and ET series.
Explore is the motto of the new EX series: the model range is designed to be a good companion both in urban areas and in the countryside. Shimano has developed its own new sole called "Ultread" to provide plenty of grip on any surface. Thanks to the midsole with an EVA foam layer, Shimano promises comfort when walking and pleasant cushioning, especially in the heel area.
The Shimano EX9 cycling shoe is a mid-height model with two BOA twist locks. These should be finely adjustable so that the shoe sits firmly on the foot when cycling and off the bike. Thanks to the grippy Ultread EX rubber sole and its profile, you have a firm grip in almost every situation. Comfort is ensured by the upper material made from a Goretex Performance membrane and breathable mesh, which is designed to keep your feet dry, as well as the EVA foam layer in the midsole, which allows you to walk comfortably. In addition, the SPD positioning on the midfoot improves pedalling comfort - at least on relaxed rides and at a moderate cadence.
The much more affordable model in the EX range from the Japanese manufacturer is the EX5. As with the 9 model, the EVA midsole and SPD positioning ensure comfort on the foot. The Ultread EX rubber sole offers plenty of grip. However, the EX5 consists of a lightweight, sporty upper shoe with mesh inserts. This is designed to fit securely and also promote breathability. The contact surface of the shoe is wider at the forefoot to provide additional grip. This is also intended to reduce the rattling of the cleats when walking.
ET stands for e-bike touring. And this is exactly what the Shimano shoes with flat soles are designed for. They offer several advantages over classic leisure shoes. Firstly, they are a combination of cycling and outdoor shoes, just like the models in the EX series. For better power transmission when pedalling, the shoe sole is stiffer at the forefoot - this should prevent the foot from tiring so quickly. When walking, the manufacturer still promises relaxed rolling behaviour. Another advantage of the shoe series is the good grip provided by the sole profile, even on wet rides on the bike or on steep passages on foot. The ET bike shoe does not have an SPD cleat on board and is therefore suitable for platform pedals.
Shimano's ET7 also benefits from the BOA twist lock, which allows the shoe to be adjusted not only quickly but also precisely. The slightly water-repellent Splashshield membrane in the forefoot area is designed to protect toes without compromising comfort. A reinforcing midsole, the Power Transfer Blade, enables good power transfer when pedalling. The sole's "360° Traction" block profile is designed to guarantee a firm grip on the pedals and the ground. In addition, transverse grooves ensure good grip on different pins and pedal cages.
The ET5 is the slightly cheaper model in the ET range, but is still similar to the ET7 in some respects. The 5 model also comes with the Power Transfer Blade, as well as the "360° Traction" block profile of the sole, which gives the bike shoe stability, efficient power transfer and good grip. Like the EX5, this shoe consists of a lightweight, sporty upper with mesh inserts. The ET5 has a speed lacing system, which is also designed to enable quick and easy adjustment to the foot.
The Shimano ET and EX series will be available from September.
