Grippy little chap: Vaude Downieville MTB shoes
Race shoes with carbon soles and a stiletto feel are for experts. Fortunately, the selection of all-round kicks such as the Vaude AM Downieville is getting bigger and bigger.

The Vaude AM Downieville Mid makes sense for touring and enduro use. The sole is grippy, the cleats are well covered so that even rocky passages can be mastered safely. The lacing system is hidden under a Velcro cap, power transmission and grip on the foot are excellent, but lacing is a little awkward. Great for autumn and spring: the shoe easily withstands splashes of puddles and showers.

Stefan Frey is from Lower Bavaria and loves the mossy, loamy trails of the Bavarian Forest as much as the rugged rock of the Dolomites. For technical descents, he is prepared to tackle almost any ascent - under his own steam. As an accessories specialist, he is the first port of call for questions about equipment and add-on parts, while as head of copywriting he sweeps the language crumbs from the pages of the BIKE print editions.
