Foam cushions on the knee cushion falls and thus prolong the biking season. This is because joint injuries are particularly long-lasting. We tested 16 lightweight enduro pads.

Which protector provides the best shock absorption? To answer this question in detail, we analysed the knee protectors in the laboratory and tested them in practice.

Laboratory: We tested the protectors on a standardised test stand. In accordance with the European motorbike test standard EN 1621.1, each protector in our test had to withstand three impacts. A 5-kilo iron block fell from a height of one metre onto the "sensor knee" with protector (photo) and hit three different areas. The sensor recorded the residual energy - the higher the value, the lower the protection. For the safe protection level 2, the residual forces must not exceed an average of 20 kilo newtons (kN); for the more tame protection level 1, the limits are 35 kN for the average of the blows. The standard limits represent minimum requirements. Nevertheless, the protective effect is enormous. Even the worst protector absorbs the impact by a remarkable 80 per cent. The best by 95 per cent.

Practice: The testers covered a distance of approx. 25 kilometres with each model. We summarised the snug fit, slip resistance, fit, functionality and ventilation of each schooner under the criterion of wearing comfort.

The test costs 1.99 euros. Why not free of charge? Because quality journalism has a price. In return, we guarantee independence and objectivity. This applies in particular to the tests in FREERIDE. We don't charge for them, but the opposite is the case: we do charge for them - tens of thousands of euros every year.
