Troy Lee Designs Stage Knee Guard MTB knee pads - Features

To ensure optimum ventilation on long tours, Troy Lee uses continuous mesh fabric on the back of the Stage protector. The material on the front is also quite airy and flexible. Only the long and heavily pre-shaped D3O pad is covered with a Cordura-like fabric for more protection.

There is only a silicone strip for support on the thigh, the rest is up to the fit. Apart from the side marking on the inside of the sock, there is no labelling to classify the protector, which is actually not permitted. The pad is firmly sewn into the knee pad and cannot be removed for washing.

Good protection - at least directly over the knee

We measured a residual force of 14.93 kN at the knee of the Stage, which puts it in the top third. Only the lateral impact value is slightly higher at 21.15 kN. Otherwise, the Troy Lee offers solid and reliable protection in the event of a fall.

Comfortable fit, high wearing comfort

A knee pad that you can confidently wear all day? The Stage from Troy Lee Designs is definitely on the list. The main material of the sock is stretchy and comfortable and fits snugly around the leg. The pre-shaped protector sits extremely snugly on the knee without creating large creases.

The back is made entirely of very airy mesh, which means that the Stage hardly gets sweaty even on climbs. A silicone band runs underneath the hollow of the knee to stabilise the fit. This worked well in our practical tests. In the long run, however, the silicone layer comes loose, but this is not important for the hold anyway, as it is only applied on the outside. After a year of continuous use, the silicone straps at the ends also lose some of their grip. Otherwise, however, the Stage is an absolute recommendation for bikers who appreciate protection and comfort in equal measure.

Conclusion on the Troy Lee Designs Stage Knee Guard:

The Troy Lee Designs Stage is also one of our favourites. The lightweight knee pad is extremely comfortable yet non-slip. Thanks to its airy materials, you'll be happy to wear it all day long. Only a seam in the hollow of the knee can get in the way when pedalling - be sure to try it out. The laboratory values are not the best in comparison, but the Stage would also pass the higher level 2. - Stefan Frey, BIKE editor
