The new ION K-Lite-R is based on the lightweight and already reduced K_Lite. Improved comfort and better pedalling characteristics were the focus of its further development in collaboration with Enduro World Series champion Richie Rude: the use of a new neoprene material should make the protector comfortable to wear even on hot days.
The Munich-based company also uses a new pad: Instead of Sas-Tec foam, Ion uses a pad made of HD Memory Foam (a mixture of PU and EVA). This should be more flexible and mould better to the joint when pedalling. The pad is secured with a Velcro strap on the thigh and neoprene inserts. The antibacterial fabric is also designed to keep the protectors odour-neutral.
The protector is available in four sizes, but should also fit perfectly: The single Velcro strap cannot hold the protector in place if it is too large. If you choose the right size, it fits tightly and does not slip. The fit is very good and the protector doesn't pinch even on long days in the saddle. Even when pedalling, you don't feel the need to take the protector off. Downhill, the protector stays in place even on nasty bumps and doesn't slip. It has also survived crashes unscathed so far.
Conclusion The K-Lite-R is a great success for Ion: the protector fits perfectly, does not slip when falling or pedalling and shows no visible signs of wear after months of use.
