The recently launched Ion Arcon LT knee protectors offer two innovations: a pad that provides better protection and is better for the environment. This is made possible by a co-operation with RE ZRO, whose plastic for the MTB knee pads is said to be completely biodegradable.

The new Ion Arcon knee protectors won an award at the latest Eurobike. What's new? In 2024, Ion will be breaking new ground in terms of environmental protection together with the manufacturer of the protector pads, RE ZRO (pronounced Re-Zero). The Arcon Kneeguard LT. is designed to offer L2 knee protection that fits perfectly both uphill and downhill and is comfortable to wear: with an extended protection area, better ventilation and low weight.

RE ZRO protectors are designed to protect the environment

On the other hand, RE ZRO protective pads are designed to be completely biodegradable after use - a term that is often used to begin with. During the manufacturing process of RE ZRO materials, special ingredients are added to accelerate the biodegradation process in an environment rich in microbes and low in oxygen. In other words: in a landfill, but not on the natural forest floor. In such a facility, microbes and fungi colonise the protective cushions on a molecular level. They feed on the carbon in the plastic until finally only biogas and biomass remain. This biological degradation process is said to take 3 to 5 years. RE ZRO draws a comparison with conventional synthetic products, such as a plastic water bottle, which would take 400 to 500 years.

But Ion also describes its Arcon Knee Guards with RE ZRO pads as innovative when it comes to what knee protectors are actually supposed to protect. The research and development department at Ion has worked intensively with RE ZRO on the customised pad, which is designed to be suitable for every type of riding.

The patent-pending structures offer level 2 (L2) protection and utilise a technology called "Shear Thinning" (shear thinning) with a 15 % larger protective surface in the centre and side zones. The breaking of the molecular bonds on impact generates energy in the form of heat and sound. The molecules then bond again immediately: hence the name Re-Zero, i.e. back to zero.

The honeycomb-like geometry of the RE ZRO pads also ensures that it stays cooler under the protector for longer. Additional laser ventilation holes in the outer material of the Arcon MTB knee pad allow a constant flow of air to pass through, enabling heat regulation between the leg and protector.
