Over the last few years, I’ve watched countless films and written reviews: skate, surf, snowboard, ski, bike – the result is nothing short of sensory overload. But it’s not just me: we’re all constantly bombarded with clips, shorts, reels and edits. It feels as though we’ve seen it all before; it’s all been done. Standing out from this endless flood is virtually impossible – and Erik Fedko’s new film is no exception. It’s not a game-changer and certainly not an absolute must-watch.
And yet: it’s turned out to be a lovely little film that’s simply a pleasure to watch.
This is mainly because Erik looks incredibly stylish on his bike and the whole production simply looks great. The filmmakers skilfully blend the 23-minute film with side glances, slapstick and psychedelic effects. There, the friends are casually leaning their heads together over the bike tyre; Lucas Huppert accidentally pinches the inner tube whilst fitting the tyre, there’s a loud ‘Pffffft’ – and everyone laughs. It’s refreshing to see that even the pros can be just as clumsy as you are sometimes. This slapstick gives the whole thing a self-deprecating twinkle in the eye that’s a real treat.
At the same time, the German slopestyle ace puts on quite a self-indulgent show to some chilled-out music. But Fedko isn’t the only one in the spotlight: all his mates also get their fair share of screen time – led by bike punk Tomas Lemoine. Fedko dances in sync with him through the skatepark, demonstrating his incredible skills, which are what make these spectacular ‘world first’ tricks possible in the first place.
Visually, the film impresses with its effortless blend of styles: at times, the footage looks like old Super 8 footage from the 1960s, with pastel colours and a shaky, hand-held look; the next moment, Red’s high-tech camera is used to capture impressive super-slow-motion sequences.
Conclusion: The film is definitely not a waste of time and is good fun. It’s well worth watching – but you don’t have to.
