The chain bounces, grinds or slips: We show you how to adjust your mountain bike gears in just a few simple steps. Plus: How to change the chain, cable housing and sprocket set.

In this photo series, we show the following work on the MTB drivetrain:

  • Correctly adjusting an older Shimano derailleur on a mountain bike
  • Change chain
  • Replace shift cables and cables
  • Fitting the cassette
BRING THE REAR DERAILLEUR INTO THE CORRECT POSITION

STEP 1: LOWER STOP

Loosen the derailleur cable. Use the adjusting screw to set the swivelling range of the rear derailleur so that the upper derailleur pulley is exactly vertical under the smallest sprocket. For inverted rear derailleurs, proceed in the same way, except that the derailleur pulley is positioned under the largest sprocket.
