Screwdriver tips: Chain service
The chain has one of the dirtiest jobs on the bike - it leaves its mark. Our BIKE lab manager shows you how to repair a broken chain, replace worn MTB chains and cut them to the correct length.

Determining the correct length of MTB chains

To do this, place the old and new chains next to each other and shorten the new chain accordingly or count the chain links and shorten the new chain to the same number of links. The alternative if you no longer have the old chain to hand: You thread the chain, then put it on the large chainring and small sprocket. The derailleur cage should be vertical when the chain is closed.

You will need this tool to work on the MTB chain:

  • Chain
  • Riveting tool
  • Rohloff Calibre
  • Pliers for chain lock
  • Rags
  • Lubricant
  • Spoke as a "third hand"

Suitable chain lock and/or rivet pin (important: there are different pins and chain locks for 9/10/11/12-speed chains)

Modern MTB chains can be locked with a rivet pin or a chain lock. Always make sure that the rivet pin/chain lock matches your chain! This is because the products are different for 9/10/11/12-speed chains.Photo: Georg Grieshaber Modern MTB chains can be locked with a rivet pin or a chain lock.
