Bafang's new three-speed automatic hub does not require an electromechanical actuator for shifting operations and can therefore also be used on normal bicycles without an electric motor and battery. When used on pedelecs, the hub can handle mid-drive motors with a maximum torque of up to 80 Nm. The 1.7-kilogram gearbox offers three gears with a gear ratio of 1:1, 1:1.136 and 1:1.165. The hub changes gears depending on the speed. The shift lever and shift cable can be omitted, which further reduces maintenance requirements. The automatic hub can be installed on 20-, 24-, 26- and 28-inch wheels and is technically suitable for use on drivetrains with Gates belts instead of chains.
When used on a 28-inch bike with a 38T chainring and 16T sprocket, the hub shifts from first to second gear at a speed of 12 to 13 km/h. Third gear follows at a speed of 19 to 20 km/h. Third gear follows at a speed of 19 to 20 km/h. The cadences are 46.3 and 67.4 respectively.
