Chains: Extend service life
A BIKE reader has three chains that he replaces every 500 kilometres using a specific system. He has had good experiences with this system and we are happy to pass on this knowledge.

The chains marked with an asterisk (*) can remain on the drive for 1000 km, as the next chain would be one that has already run 500 km or 1000 km anyway. If all chains have run 1500 km, you can usually replace them again, but you should then measure the wear from time to time. There is often another 200-500 km per chain. The advantage is that the chainrings and cassette last a long time and wear evenly. If all the chains are worn, the chainrings, at least the middle and the small chainring, and the cassette are also due for replacement.

Stefan Frey is from Lower Bavaria and loves the mossy, loamy trails of the Bavarian Forest as much as the rugged rock of the Dolomites. For technical descents, he is prepared to tackle almost any ascent - under his own steam. As an accessories specialist, he is the first port of call for questions about equipment and add-on parts, while as head of copywriting he sweeps the language crumbs from the pages of the BIKE print editions.
