Reader question: To the chain test (BIKE 5/2011->) I have a question. Chain locks belong in every saddlebag, right! But which chain lock works with the 10-speed Shimano chains? Is it even possible to fit chain locks to Shimano chains (directional) without any loss of function when using them as a retrofit? How compatible are the chains with cogs and sprockets from other manufacturers such as Shimano-SRAM etc. (as the chains are also different widths)?
Answer from Dipl. Ing. Robert Kühnen:
All ten-speed locks work with Shimano chains. The use of chain locks works with the directional chains almost without loss. Only if the lock is on the shifter/rivet at the moment of shifting can it possibly hook briefly. However, with 114 links and one lock, the probability is not high. In practice, it has worked well so far. I would insert a Wippermann lock just in case, but initially close the Shimano chain with a Shimano rivet - it is more durable. Compatibility: Nine-speed and ten-speed chains are compatible with each other across manufacturer boundaries. Ten-speed chains also run on nine-speed sprockets, but can jam at the front, so we advise against using them.
