Beauty is fleeting - and mountain bikes are no exception. Years in the mud and dust eventually cause the aura to fade, and even the best polishes and lubricants are of little help. At the latest when the MTB rattles and creaks like our Scott "G-Zero", built in 2000, the question arises: scrap it or tune it?
We decided to pimp it up. After all, a few new parts can often give a decrepit oldie a second lease of life. But mountain bike tuning is much more than just renewing old technology. Tuning is emotion. Tuning is playfulness. Tuning is an attitude to life. And above all: tuning is individualism. Only in the tinkering room at home can the bike be one hundred per cent tailored to personal preferences.
Sore back? A suitable stem can work wonders. Migraine after bumpy trails? A new suspension fork turns the bike into a sedan chair. Tuning means optimisation. Whether function, weight, appearance or all of the above is up to you. We went into a tuning frenzy during the restoration of our "G-Zero".
In a fortnight, the old cucumber became a classy custom mountain bike. Expensive, but actually priceless in this splendour. To ensure that your tuning is also a success, we have compiled all the important information in this special. Have fun tuning!
